Audition Frequently Asked Questions

Who can Audition?
The short answer is anyone. Arts in McNairy stages a diverse range of theatrical productions, requiring actors of every variety, age, and experience level. All auditions are open to the pubic and we do not engage in precasting; if you are allowed to audition for a role, you can rest assured that you have a fair shot at it. We produce adult and children's theatre, so shows may have casting requirements based on types and availability of roles, or age appropriateness of content. In general, we are a family-friendly, community-driven theatre program that prioritizes participation in the arts. Everyone is welcome!
What if i have no performing experience?
No problem! We welcome theatre participants of all backgrounds from novice to professionals.
How Do I Prepare and What do I bring to auditions?
If you're under 18, bring a parent or guardian to complete and sign audition forms. Some directors may publish script excerpts or other audition materials in advance, but most productions do not require preparation beforehand. Musical theatre auditions may require you to sing or perform simple dance steps, so selecting and practicing a song that showcases your vocal abilities may work to your advantage.  Otherwise, bring yourself, your talent, and your confidence!
What will I have to do in auditions?
You will be required to complete a basic audition form while you wait your turn. Some directors may wish to make a photo as a visual aid for casting. You will be asked to read aloud from the script or other materials prepared by the director. You may be asked to read individually or in small groups. Younger children may be asked to participate in simple theatre exercises. If you are auditioning for a musical, you will be required sing and may be taught simple choreography as part of a group exercise. Most shows are cast within 24-48 hours of auditions, and announced online. Occasionally, callbacks may be required to complete casting.
What if my child can't read yet?
No big deal! We may ask them to repeat phrases from the script or perform age appropriate acting games with other children.
Where are auditions?
Auditions are held in the theatre of the Latta Visitors and Cultural Center, 205 West Court Avenue in downtown Selmer. Arts in McNairy occasionally stages productions at other area venues, which may affect audition location. The site of all production activities will be specified in audition announcements, typically 4-8 weeks prior to show dates. If no location is specified, we will see you at the Latta!
When are auditions?
Audition dates and requirements are typically announced on Arts in McNairy social media, about 4-8 weeks before show dates. Special instructions beyond what's covered here will be posted there as well. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and TikTok!
What does it cost to participate?
There are no participation fees. Cast members may occasionally be asked to provide their own costumes, props, etc., but all of AiM's community theatre programs are free to cast and production crew members.
What Happens when I'm cast in a show?
Congratulations! Cast lists are typically posted on Arts in McNairy social media within a day or two of auditions. Some directors may communicate directly with cast members through individual or group messaging. Accepting a role is as simple as showing up for the first rehearsal, ready to put on a great show. Consult your director for rehearsal schedules and other production details, and break a leg!
What if I'm more comfortable behind the scenes?
Do we have a job for you!? Every production team includes stage managers, costumers, prop masters, set builders, light/sound technicians, and so on. Of course, musicals also require musicians. We provide regular opportunities for involvement in all of these roles, and more. Just show up at any audition to let us know where you want to plug in!
