Performing Arts

The Performing Arts Committee is primarily responsible for the highly acclaimed Arts in McNairy theatre season.  This increasingly popular series of dramatic productions draws performers and audience members from a wide geographic area and provides local citizens with an opportunity to participate in and enjoy first rate theatre experiences.

Each new season begins in the fall and runs through June of the following year involving literally, hundreds of area adults and children in various roles.  True to the spirit of community theatre, all auditions are open and the shows are staged with an all volunteer cast and crew.

The committee is currently doing four shows a year with a good balance of youth, adult and musical theatre offerings performed at McNairy Central High School’s “Little Theatre.”  A typical show will be performed Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 with a Sunday matinee at 2:00 P.M.  Some shows run for two weekends and at least one of the youth productions is usually staged for area students in an exclusive daytime performance.  These shows may be eligible for ticket subsidy through the Jackson Arts Council and the Tennessee Arts Commission.  Dates, times and personnel vary from one production to another so check local media sources, the Arts in McNairy blog or better yet, join AiM to stay abreast of the latest details.

The AiM performing arts committee has also been involved in educating children about the theatre through summer art camps and the visionary “Young Directors Series.”  Qualifying high school seniors and college students are sometimes offered their first opportunity to direct a play with an all youth cast, crew and production team.  Under the watchful eye of an experienced adult committee member, the first time director has full responsibility for overseeing the production from budget preparation to closing curtain.  Through this unique program, Arts in McNairy is helping develop the next generation of arts leadership.
