The Literary Arts Committee responds to the community’s need for literary awareness and appreciation. Past projects include the innovative “Fiction and a Flick” series, “Hollywood Comes to Selmer” and the Southern Fried Poetry Contest.

Participants in the “Fiction and a Flick” events read a selected work of fiction provided by a sponsoring book retailer then assemble to watch the cinematic adaptation over a delicious diner. During coffee and desert, the group is engaged in an interesting discussion of both works moderated by area literature professors. The events are fun, educational and pleasing to the palate!

The Literary Arts Committee cosponsored a creative writing workshop with UTM Selmer titled “Hollywood Comes to Selmer.” The event brought UCLA professor and creative film consultant, Lew Hunter to McNairy County for a well attended weekend screenwriting workshop.

Poetry enthusiasts enjoyed the committee’s well received “Southern Fried Poetry Contest.” The event generated great participation by area poets, young and old, who submitted original works for review by a panel of judges. Winners were offered the chance to read their poems for those assembled at a reception and awards ceremony. A commemorative volume containing all entries was published and the winning poets and their work appeared in a feature article in the Independent Appeal.
